In the past few weeks she has started using the milk, all done, and more signs to tell us what she wants. She is also clapping her hands, saying amen, mama, and dada. She also does this CUTE little "tshe" sound. It's hard to type the sound correctly but imagine the beginning sound of the word "tsunami" and that's about what she does. She started crawling two weeks ago at Grandma and Granddaddy Reider's house in Leesburg, Virginia and she's only getting better and better at it by the day. Nearly every time we go to get her up from a nap she is sitting in her bed rather than lying down. She's just getting so big. This mama isn't ready for it all yet. I know it just continues to go faster and faster from here on out.

She is also showing interest in certain things. She LOVES balloons (big surprise), Verity's baby Belle that she was given for her birthday, and she still loves her blanket more than anything. She's a pro at pointing to things and holding up things to show us. She loves books and her linking rings. She also makes, quite possibly, the most annoying screeching sound when she wants something. I almost can't stand it after too long. It's like a, "nails on the chalkboard" type sound to me. Good thing she's so darned cute and I love her so much.

I will be taking her 9 month pictures THIS WEEK (self imposed deadline). I must do it before she turns 10 months. Verity's 9 month pictures are my absolute favorites and I would be remiss to not do this for us and for Esther. She is such a joy and such a sweet baby.

Esther's 9 month statistics:
Height: 27 inches --- 50%
Weight: 17.6 pounds --- 50%

She loves books. We have a basket of toys that are just for her and there are several board books in it. She will look through the basket and just pull out all the books.

She's been enjoying the linky bugs that Aunt Marty and Uncle Joe gave her.

That smile!! After gymnastics this morning, Ryan Gray took Verity to the grocery store to pick out some of these foods that she would like to try. They came home with starfruit, a juicy apple, carrots, a green bell pepper, bananas (of course), yellow squash, and a Florida avocado for Esther (her very favorite thing on the planet). Verity's prayer at lunch just now was this:

"Dear God, help me to eat healthy food so I can grow big and strong and Dr. Long will be so proud of me. And thank for all my food. In Jesus' name, Amen."

I love hearing her little prayers. I also love that she specifically prayed that she would do well so that Dr. Long would be proud of her. Encouragement from the doctor was a very good thing.

Verity's 3 year statistics:

Height: 37 1/4 inches --- 50%
Weight: 27 1/2 pounds --- 10%
Eye chart check: 20/40 --- exactly where expected for her age
Hearing check (aka - the "ear game" where she listens for a beep): passed

Both Ryan and I and sweet Esther (9 mos) were at the appointment and I as so proud of how well Verity listened and obeyed the nurse and doctor. She was following all their instructions. Both the nurse and doctor commented that Verity did better with following instructions than most other 3 year olds and that most children will either cooperate for the vision test OR the hearing test, but not usually for both. It made my "mama" heart swell and feel so proud.

Things Verity loves at 3 years old:
Trains!!!
motorized trains
race cars
Bob the Builder
Disney Princesses
Having her hair curled
making cupcakes
making cookies
coloring
painting
play dough
painting her nails
riding her rocking horse
books
lip gloss
Veggie Tales
doll houses
ice cream
stamps
stickers
horses (her newest interest)
bananas
Esther
chick-fil-a
gymnastics

Phrases we hear the most:
"That would be okay."
"That would be kind"
"Ha-gna!" (used in place of "Ta-daa")
"it's my Esther Bunny!"
"I love you so much, my daddy."
"I love you so much"
"Take my life and let it be consecrated lord to thee."
"That doesn't match"
"That matches"

Opening a present from mommy and daddy the morning of her birthday.

Verity was Elizabeth Dew Price's flower girl on her birthday in Wake Forrest, North Carolina. Since nearly right after they were married I know they've wanted a baby. The wanting turned to desiring, the desiring turned to longing, the longing to pleading, then to patience, and finally... to receiving. It would be half wrong of me to say that she alone felt this way. I know that he too, just outwardly manifesting itself differently, desired to be the parent of their very own infant. They would admire others little ones from afar and gladly offer to take them under their wings if a mommy or daddy needed the help. There has been an aching in their hearts that is patiently longing to be filled.

It was bittersweet calling her so soon to share our wonderful news when it was our turn. I knew she'd be thrilled... and heartbroken that her arms would still be empty after so much waiting. She was excited and solemn. But truly excited. She drove three hours the day our first was born.

They were given a precious gift a few years ago. Each of his days was numbered before time ever began, and so today their little one rests safely in our Father's loving arms. "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord," was all he wrote the morning after. He didn't talk much. She talked a lot, sharing every detail with us several times. It's how they processed their heartbreak.

Just one week later he taught from the pulpit of how, "hope does not disappoint," and lost all composure. Before his congregation, he wept. They saw in his face just how deeply disappointment burnt into him, and how true that hope still lived. I will never forget that Sunday.

And we know that God's timing is perfect. Now just hours away from receiving again, they wait. Just a little longer. Just the two of them. One last time. Their bodies braced for more exhaustion and their anxious, racing hearts for more fulfillment than I believe they are prepared to handle. Scheduled to be cautious, he will be small and will be their joy.

"Maybe the Lord is having us wait so that we will all have our children together," she once said to me. Tomorrow we make the drive to them, two families, full in a mini-van.

Tomorrow, Lord willing, is their turn.

Daddy's Day!

I am so excited to celebrate Father's Day this year. It seems like with a new baby it's all the more exciting. I've been a busy little (secretive) bee working on some special daddy's day cards from "his girls" with the help of shutterfly.com. See some of my creations. They look awesome and I can't wait to get them to him.

<div class="sflyProductPreviewWidgetTop" style="height: 6px; Truly obsessed. She loves her "Thomas" trains and plays with them nearly all day, every day. They've captured her heart and she (usually) takes very good care of them. They go to the potty with her. They watch her eat all of her meals from their designated spot on the kitchen table; all lined up in a row. She puts them to bed in "Tivens Sheds" (at least that's how SHE says it. It should be Tidmouth Sheds but it's just too cute to correct just yet).

So, on Saturday we brought her to walk along some real, live, train tracks. I, of course, took it as an opportunity to snap a few pictures to document her love of trains. She was exceptionally cooperative and I'm so, very thrilled with the results. She is my joy.

She is beautiful.

How to unlock your door.

There are many popular methods to unlocking one's front door. Apparently, this is my method of choice.

Turn on your stove top to make a scrambled egg breakfast for your 18 month old.
Decide that you will shake out the old entry way rug because your mother brought you a new one last night.

Step outside your front door to shake the rug and, OH! The phone is ringing!

Step back inside to pick up the ringing phone, then back outside with the phone and the rug to continue talking and shaking... the rug.

Close the door behind you because, after all, you are responsible and don't want your 18 month old to wander outside while you're "multi-tasking" and fall down the thresh-hold of your front door to skin her knee.

Hear that the door closes behind you by your 18 month old and think to yourself, "Wow, what a little helper she's being."

Hang up the phone, set down the rug and turn to see that, in the last 15 seconds, your 18 month old hasn't tried to climb the stairs that she's not allowed to climb or gotten into something she shouldn't be into.

Open the doo...

ahem...

Open the doo...

Oh no! You've locked yourself out of the house with your clumsy baby inside who likes to climb the stairs and the stove on for the eggs your were about to make for breakfast.

What do you do?

Call for help.

Keep your baby entertained from outside the door by singing, clapping, knocking, counting, reciting the alphabet, anything you can do to ensure that she stays just on the other side of the door and not climbing the stairs or trying to cook her first breakfast, as well as make a general fool of yourself for all neighbors within sight or earshot.

Greet the nice men from the police and fire departments as they arrive.

Allow them to assist you in opening your door.

Thank them profusely for their assistance in unlocking the door so your baby doesn't fall down the stairs or burn down the house.

And, voila! You have an unlocked door, a safe baby, and an intact house.

All joking aside, I am so thankful for the help of these wonderful men today when we needed them. "It'll happen, it's normal." Verity pitched her first FIT! This was the real deal. She was SO hungry the other morning when Ryan brought her downstairs for breakfast. He gave her some diced cantaloupe while I got dressed and came down to get her breakfast ready and feed her. She finished her cantaloupe when I got downstairs, Ryan hugged us goodbye and I continued to prepare her food. She just couldn't wait. She started fussing and squirming like I've never seen before. After not wanting to listen when I told her to stop and say please for her breakfast, she got more and more upset. I tried walking away from her so she'd see she wasn't getting the reaction she wanted and it made no difference.

Her mind was made up. At that point I realized that I couldn't let her win. This was her first fit! If things happened the way she wanted there were sure to be more fits in my future. I had to hold my ground. Walking away didn't work and she was getting more worked up. I picked her up to see if she would catch her breath and calm down enough to decide to obey. More squirming and fussing. I brought her into her room, put her in her bed, and walked out. I've read that removing them from the environment where they were fussing can make a difference. I called Ryan and we prayed for her and for wisdom for me. I wanted to teach her and not provoke her at all. Wisdom was needed. After another few minutes I went into her room to check on her and she had calmed down a little. She saw me and started screaming and thrashing about in her crib... not ready to try and obey. I gave her her lovie and walked back out. Then it occured to me that I could pray with her for God to calm her down and help her use self-control... duh. So we did, and big suprise, she calmed down. I asked her if she was ready to eat, she nodded yes, and was furvently doing the "eat" sign. I brought her out of her room and put her in her high chair. I asked her to say, "please." She was still a little fussy, but nothing like she had been and she said, "please." WE DID IT! She made it! I made it! Praise the Lord! I'm sure we have many more situations like this in our future, but I'm glad that the Lord gave me wisdom to handle it as we did. He is good!

Uncle Dan

My brother is staying with us for a few days this week to help me with my broken foot by playing with his favorite (only) niece. Warm, soft, chubby, crying, pink, and perfect laying on my chest while her daddy cut the umbilical chord and she became an independent being. No longer taking everything she needed from me. No longer was I solely responsible for this life. No longer on auto-pilot. She was no longer intimately and exclusively mine. I now had to share her, let others hold the thing that I wanted so badly to protect just as I had so carefully and tenderly for the last nine months.

She could be held by others, hear voices other than my own and her daddy's with greater clarity. It all happened so fast. 21 hours of long, hard labor and then so quickly she was here. She was welcomed into the world by the luckiest parents, the most grateful grandparents, the proudest aunts and uncles, the dearest friends we could ask for, a wonderful doctor who took excellent care of us through our pregnancy and labor, and a supportive nurse who chose to stay with us several hours after his shift ended to be here for me and for her arrival.

We were so blessed. She was laid on my chest all wet and covered with life and I cried. I cried so hard, like a woman completely out of control of her emotions and completely taken over by joy. I somehow remembered in that moment to turn and look at her daddy, who was still standing over my shoulder, to see his face and commit to memory the way he looked those first moments that he saw his little girl.

It was a blur, everything happened so fast, the chord cutting, the stitches, the weighing, bath, excited family and friends, and then... calm. An overwhelming abundance of calm and peace met us in the hospital when we were "settled in" for the night. Up and down we went all night long for this new mamma, baby, and supportive husband to try and get a hang of this nursing thing. Pain, so much pain I almost couldn't stand it. Was this normal? Was it like this for everyone? Surely not... it was. Completely normal those first days. Looking at that swolen little face and button eyes, I was in love all over again. This child couldn't yet show me love or tell me she's thankful for the things I had endured for her, but I loved her so much.

I get it now, Lord. Sitting on the edge of the hospital bed the morning after she was born, baby and husband still sound asleep beside me in our room, I prayed for wisdom, I begged like a starving beggar for it. I want to do right by her and raise her to love the one who created her. I sat on the bed about to eat my breakfast and realized that I love her more today than I did yesterday. I became overcome again by emotion at the thought that this could very likely continue for the rest of my life. Could I handle that? Is there love enough inside me to match what I feel toward her right now? There must be, as it's only grown more over the last yer. I remember thinking that for the number of years I've lived, my parents have loved me through all of them (even the ones when I was terrible to them), they have loved me more each day than the day before for 26 years. It made me realize that until that point, when my baby entered the world, I didn't acctually understand how deep my parents love is for me. And then that thought was interupted by a "knock, knock" on my heart and the Lord whispering, "Sarah, you have no idea how much I love you."

Woah.

I didn't. I have no idea. I mean, I know you gave your son, and... woah. You gave your son. Your son that you made, that was born a baby so small and helpless just like mine, who you wanted more than anything to protect from the things he would face in this world... for this world. You gave your son. You're right, Father. I have no idea how much you love me. I am learning though. If each day my love for Verity continues to grow and it's only been one day and I already feel as though my heart could beat its way out of my chest for her... and you've been God in heaven knowing me before the foundations of the earth, that's a lot of years for love to compound. It's more love than I think I can comprehend. You really love me. I think I'm beginning to get it.

Those thoughts filled my head the morning after Verity was born. They've proven to be true each day of this wonderful year since then. Life has been so good. We've had our challenges, our frights, our 105 degree fevers, our sleepless nights, our hospital visits for nursing infections, but also our joys, laughs, and moments of God-given wisodom. And you know... I'd do it all again. The good and the not so good.

God has been so faithful to us this year. Faithful to see us through those scarey times when we felt completely clueless. And they were abundant. I thought I would be such a good parent before she was born... everything changed. I become stupid when I have my baby in my arms. I want everything to be good and safe and right for her, but I can't do it... curse of Eve, fallen world. If there's anything we've done right, it was in those moments of God-given wisdom. I am embarking on something new and somewhat scary.

When Verity was born I began sewing again. I had learned YEARS ago and hadn't really put my hand to it for quite a while. I've enjoyed making little dresses for her and from time to time have received compliments on them when she is wearing one.

Well, a friend, of a friend, of a friend (did you get that?) heard about my dresses and wanted to see them. She is putting together a craft show featuring goodies and creations by moms in Tallahassee. I am so excited that I was asked to participate in this craft show! I feel out of my league but if this is something I want to do then I have to start somewhere... so I'm starting on November 24th from 3:30-6:30 at Cookies and Tea For Me on Shamrock across from Killearn United Methodist Church.

Here are a few of the most recent dresses I've completed.

Isn't she beautiful! The fabric is really what makes this red one so delicious. Perfect for warm Florida Decembers. And if it gets cooler, just layer it over a turtleneck or long sleeved shirt with some leggings or stockings and you're little girl is good to go. French seams, fully lined, satin ribbon shoulder ties... woo wee! I'm telling you it doesn't get better than this.

This beauty is made from a true Sateen pillowcase. Two-toned green damask with wide, red satin shoulder ties. Yum.

Both dresses are in size 6 and ready to purchase for $35 each if you're interested.

Still debating? You can find these and more like them at the Mom's craft show on November 24 from 3:30-6:30 pm at Cookies and Tea for Me.

If you have little girls and would like a beautiful hair bow to match one of these precious dresses you will also find My Little Girl, Custom Hair Bows at the craft show, same time, same place. Need a hair bow to go with a special dress and haven't found the perfect match? Liz can make you one custom because she's amazing like that.

So, come and shop for Christmas gifts locally and support Mom's here in Tallahassee. I think I inherited my love of plates from my mother who has more than several sets of her own.

I love plates. I love to eat off them. I love to look at them. I DON'T love to wash them. Most importantly, I love to hang them on my walls.

They come in different shapes and sizes and can be grouped together so nicely to create a pleasing design element in a room. One of the best places I saw a grouping of plates was on a bathroom wall in a friend's house. The walls were a salmon-pink and the plates were that burgundy and white toile.

My love of plates has gotten me into a predicament. I want to hang them but I'm too cheap to purchase all those plate hangers that are $2.50 a pop.

I know the Nester says they are one of her decorating must-haves, but I think I'd go broke buying all the plate hangers I would need. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention so I've come up with an invention of my own to hang my plates with things most everyone has in their home. My solution:

Duct tape & twist-ties

Addendum: This didn't work out as famously as I had hoped. After hanging my creation, it was beautifully displayed for approximately 30 minutes before falling to crash into many little pieces behind and on our bed (luckily we were not in bed at the time). I have done this with great success though. I would suggest using something a little more sturdy than a twist tie, maybe string or a ribbon that you tie in a knot below the tape to "anchor" it if that makes sense.

Domestically Speaking has a wonderful post about DIY plate hangers and hers seem to work because she followed Martha's instructions. I should learn from the experienced.

I know. I did it... we made it... it didn't go horribly. It acctually went very well. My friend Jamie is expecting a little girl on October 3rd and I was more than thrilled to co-host a shower for her in our home. Given the non-existent budget that I had to pull this off, I'm proud of how things turned out. I must say, having a baby of my own didn't hurt either. I pulled a lot of things out of Verity's room to decorate around the house. A picture's worth a thousand words so I'll share some of those and stop my yapping.

A small house full of shower guests is so much warmer than a large, sparse house. When I first put that up I was terrified it looked like a Disney Princess party but once I hung the little dresses beneath the ribbons it looked much better. I was thinking people would eat more, but alas... they did not. This made for a happy husband seeing as how I had to swat his hand away from the temptation of the food all morning. Not much of it was eaten so he's been binging on petit fours all day. Ewe, don't look at my fridge. I should have taken everything off the front of it.

The AMAZING diaper cake created by co-host, Logan, and her wonderfully talented mother.

Me, Jamie, and Logan

The faces of competition.

A yummy cake created by my wonderful friend, Claire. My husband and I have been married for 2 years and have a 7 1/2 month old baby girl. I know, we didn't waste time. We are also running with gazelle intensity to become DEBT FREE as soon as possible so we can get on with life. It's already showing signs of wear. Not to mention the fact that it is WAY TO BIG for our house, and all the other piece of furniture look like munchkins by comparison. But it's comfy and my 6'1" husband can sleep on it when he naps on Sunday.
Pillow = $5 Goodwill
coffee table = $20 unfinished from Lowe's
plaster acorn = $3
books = from family
candle holder = homemade, supplies maybe cost $1

Table = <strike>TRASH!</strike> Garage Sale for $5. The people had this piece on their back porch and fed their cats on top of it! Seriously, they put the cat food and water bowl right on top and as a result it was terribly warped but my (amazing) mom and I salvaged it years ago and it acted as my hope chest before I was married. I love this table. It's so simple. It is now used like a china hutch. It has all our fancy (once a year but should be more) dishes in it. I'm debating painting it. I just don't have the guts yet. I want to soooo badly though. But I'm also not sure what color. Hm.... Painting it would also hide our repair from the cats.

Okay, Table top...

Arthur Court platter = wedding gift :)
lamp = wedding gift (a set of three)
black tray = grandfather-in-law's estate. No joke, my mom found it by the side of the road while driving home one day. She had this gut feeling that she should take a certain street to go home rather than her usual route and low and behold, some people had JUST put this out by the side of the road because their dogs had ripped off the front of the skirt. See.

Then we found some fabric that will match and I need to makeshift reupholster that skirt.

chair = from my great aunt's estate (it's one of two)
windows panels = $12 per panel at Wal-Mart. I just loved their color. There is another huge window in this room and there are two panels on it as well.
window topper = mistreatment! My second mistreatment ever to be precise. I actually don't like it all that much but haven't gotten around to changing it yet. I will though. Fabric was from Wal-Mart and was $3.50 per yard so about $9 total.

Total for this room: $303. WOAH! That's a shocker. Many of the items in here were wedding gifts or "treasure hunting" finds (a.k.a. trash finds). So there we have it. I think I did it! Hopefully this will post properly. Thanks so much for reading! I'm going to see yours now. :)

First Post

This is a test!
